long skinny hallway at grounded coffeehouse with artwork on the walls

Students in Mrs. Dombeck’s and Mrs. Lawson’s art classes recently completed self portraits! Twenty-four of them are on display at Grounded Coffeehouse during the month of October.  Four self portraits were selected from each grade K-5.  Check out the statements below from the artists themselves on what inspired them, the materials they used, and their favorite parts of their portraits!

5th Grade

Millie Lobb: I used woodless colored pencils and colored pencils and just a normal pencil. I used a texture plate for the background and just went for it for the rest.

Connor Wasson: I used crayons and pencils for my portrait.

Kaelyn Baldridge: I used crayons, pencil, and thin markers. I like it because the background is very colorful. The eyes look really good too and the mouth. I just think it looks really good, and that's why I really like it.

Jaiden Sheppard: The materials I used were markers and a pencil. I drew it the way I did because I looked at the mirror. Some things I like about my self portrait are the mustache because I’m growing one, the sweater, and the hair because it's different.

4th Grade

Era Eastes: In my art I used crayon. My artwork was very fun to make. It took me two art classes to finish this self portrait.

Carsen Walters: Carsen used crayon and pencil for his portrait.

Adelaide Rempp: I drew me in a Chiefs jersey and I was wearing a headband. I loved drawing this self portrait of me, and I have drawn many things before but nothing like this. It’s my favorite drawing probably; it's amazing. I'm glad I drew this.

Wyatt Grose: I used pencil, crayons, and markers. I decided to make it look as realistic as possible. I like the eyes and ears.

3rd Grade

Marilee Long: I love art because it’s really calm.  And it’s really cool to see what you can make!

Carter Owen: I put all of my effort into my art. I did not expect my art to be in a coffee shop. I love art.

Paisley Shriner: I was inspired by my sister. She is a good artist and I tried out and boom I made this and I love art. I made it because when school ended the last day of art, my teacher asked us to draw a self portrait and I did it great. Then I had a notebook and drew a lot of self portraits during the summer and I got better and did it again this year.

Enzo Podrebarac: The materials I used were crayons, markers, and a pencil. I drew the self portrait the way I did because I got inspiration from the picture up on the board of Frida Kahlo’s self portrait for the leaves in the back. Two things I like are the dog on my shoulder, because it's one of my lovies and the second lovie I’ve ever had. The second thing I like about my portrait is the leaf background because I wanted to add it because I was inspired.

2nd Grade

Benny Kleczka: I used pencil. I do like art. I play football; that is why I’m wearing my uniform in my portrait.

Lexie Odell: I love cats. I used texture plates. I like my portrait. I like drawing.

Aubrey Holek: The materials I used were crayons and a pencil. I drew the portrait the way I did to make it look as similar as it can be to me. Some things I really like about my portrait is how I drew the face, like the eyes, and the hair with how close I got the color to my hair color by mixing the crayon colors.

Trever Burnett: The materials I used were a pencil and crayons. I like it because it’s one of my best drawings. I drew it the way I did by looking at a mirror and drawing what I saw.

1st Grade

Drew Workman: I took my time and I tried as best as I could. This is my portrait. I used crayon and pencil. I am happy with my portrait.

Baylor Clark: The rainbow shirt is my favorite part. In my portrait I am happy.  I love art class.

Adalena Tilman: The materials I used were markers, crayons and a pencil. I drew the artwork this way because it was the best way I thought I could draw it. Two things I really like about my self portrait is the shirt because it is pink and has a rainbow and the eyes because they look like puppy eyes.

Tucker Allen: The materials I used were marker for the eyes, a pencil for the outline and hair, and crayon for the rest of the portrait including the pink crayon for the red headed monkey. I drew the artwork this way because I wore a red shirt that day and a shark tooth necklace that is really special because it is from my grandma and has a special way to put it on. Some things I really like about my self portrait are my stuffed animal monkey and my pet rat. I also like the way I drew the shark tooth necklace around my ears.

Kindergarten

Jack Shafferman: I liked my drawing. I drew my dog. I like art.

Blakely Joest: My portrait is listening. I made it with crayons and pencil.  I like art.

Ayven Kleczka: The materials I used were a pencil, markers, and crayons. I drew it the way I did because I like it. Two things I like about my self portrait are my shirt because it has color to it, and the black cat I drew because I like them.

Rhett Soetaert: The materials I used were markers. I drew it the way I did because that is how I look. Two things I like about my self portrait are my clothes and my hair because they look really good.
