Director of Speech and Drama
After graduating from Sterling College with a degree in Speech and Theatre Education, Mr. Harrell began teaching in Tonganoxie during the fall of 1989. He is currently teaching freshmen speech classes. Additionally, he instructs and coaches the THS debate, forensics, and scholars' bowl squads. He is the director of theatre at the high school.
Mr. Harrell has directed over 75 theatrical productions at THS. He has coached the THS forensics and debate squads to 17 state team championships, while individual students on the THS teams have won state and national awards. Mr. Harrell's teams have been recognized for outstanding achievement by both the Kansas Senate and House of Representatives.
He was the Kansas Debate Coaches Invitational-2001 Kansas Debate Coach of the Year. In 2018, the National Federation of High Schools selected Mr. Harrell as their 2017-18 Outstanding Speech/Debate/Theatre Educator Award winner for Kansas. Steve is currently serving as the Kansas Speech Communication Association representative to the KSHSAA Board of Directors.
Mr. Harrell was the 1998 district nominee for Kansas Teacher of the Year and the 2001 Tonganoxie Master Teacher of the Year.
Steve lives Tonganoxie with his wife, Kathy. Together they have two daughters, Mallory- attending graduate school at Kansas University, and Lauren-completing her undergraduate degree at Missouri State University. The family has a pug named Cookie and a cat named Scarlett.
