Sondra Sparks
Teacher

Welcome to kindergarten!  Your child is entering an important time in his/her life, the beginning of his/her school career.  Kindergarten is a German word that means “garden of children.”  Through our mutual efforts in nurturing your child, we will be rewarded by seeing great growth in your little one this year.

I will begin by telling you that I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Ottawa University in December 2005. I also earned a Master of Education in Technology Enhanced Teaching degree from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2011. This is my eleventh year of teaching. I live here in Tonganoxie with my husband Derek and two sons, Mason (4 1/2) and Logan (2 1/2).

I see kindergarten as a place for children to be exposed to and explore a wide variety of objects, playthings, activities, songs, and literature.  Centers in my room include books, blocks, listening station, learning games, iPads, computers, puzzles, imagination, and math stations.  I love to see the children play and work with hands on materials. I plan to do art projects that correlate the letters being studied.  Our projects encourage good listening skills, following directions, and improvement of fine motor skills.

As well as being a place for exposure to a variety of experiences, kindergarten is most definitely the place to gain an academic foundation for reading and math skills.  Learning the letters, their sounds, how to print the letters, reading basic sight words, and sounding out and spelling simple words are key elements of our reading program.  In math, the children will learn numerals, counting, sorting, patterns, and shapes, as well as how to do simple math problems.  The children are introduced to steps in problem solving and strategies to solve problems.  This problem solving method will be continued beyond the kindergarten year.

You and I have a great responsibility to give our best to these little children.  I am looking forward to the challenge of this year and I hope that you are as well!
