Here is a little about me:
My passion in teaching lies in helping all students believe in themselves and their abilities, both in and out of the classroom.
Teaching is so enjoyable because I have the opportunity to watch students grow and change, becoming better readers and writers every day. It's exciting to make the classroom a fun place to be, while also focusing our daily activities on the state academic standards.
I came to teaching after working as a staff writer (reporter) at The Kansas City Star. I have brought some of the skills I used as a journalist _ listening to others, using varied resources to study a topic, writing up information for others to understand easily _ to my job as a teacher.
I completed my teacher training at Ottawa University's Overland Park campus. Also, I earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Southern California as well as bachelor's degrees in political science and communication from the University of California, San Diego. Yes, I am originally from San Diego (as you can tell from my schooling), but I have made my home in the Kansas City area since 1995 and love the people's friendliness and lack of artificiality.
I love to travel and have enjoyed trips to England and Wales, Toronto, Winnipeg, Mexico City, Colima (a state in Mexico), Boston, New York, Chicago, Portland, Houston, Minneapolis, and more. Some of my favorite things in life are reading (especially biographies and memoirs), playing tennis, listening to music (I'm a blues and jazz fan), and going to sporting events.
